The Parts And The Whole

An anthropologist tells of the concept of the face in African cultures while the camera shows wooden figures and masks from her private collection.

Singers are shown at work – for them the face is the “mask”, a crucial part of the body that needs to be animated in order to sing with a full tone. They put on their masks as soon as they prepare for the first note – and transform into stage personalities.

Colourful plaster casts created and painted on by children in a refugee hostel show aspects of the childrens’ personalities without giving away their identities in this restrained, indirect self-portrait.

The short essay film shows the mask in its double function as a veil and as a fool's cap. It can give its users freedom and protection.
